PEOPLE COLLECT SEASHELLS

I created this project between 2012 and 2014.

My works begin with stories about childhood memories: catching oysters on the beach and looking for snail shells. As I gradually discovered this topic for myself, I thought a lot about the image of the snail. It is an animal that lives in a natural environment and has a soft but rough body with a rough outer shell to protect itself from attacks by enemies.The story of the series began just like that. Over time, I developed the painting series “Snail Man” by working on this concept.

In this series of artworks, I painted about 20 paintings with oil paint on canvas, expressed with the technique of drawing thinly over many layers. The use of space in my paintings is simple in accordance with the pop art style.

The large, powerful composition takes up most of the work’s surface and the strong symbol of the foot is repeated in many different positions. Together with the stylization of the snail shell image, I have created a strange creature that is half human, half animal.
